MANY women made use of a free medical health check-up held in Suva yesterday.
The Fiji Muslim’s Women’s league in conjunction with the Medical Services Pacific took the initiative to take the cervical cancer screening and health awareness to the community.
League’s vice president, Gazala Akbar said this was also to mark the International Women’s Day today.
“As a community, we felt the need to work together with the concerned parties to get rid of the many problems and issues that surround women,” said Ms Akbar. She said there was a need to act and the time to act was now.
One of the participants at the hall, Ilisabeta Vuranisina, came all the way from Navua to grab the wonderful opportunity.
“This is a good chance to gain more information about the things that concern women. I’m lucky that I got a chance to come all the way from Navua to take part in this,” she said.
Ms Vuranisina, who owns a hair salon in Navua, said husbands played an important role in supporting women. “I am glad that my husband is very supportive and he was the one informing me about the check-up,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Muslim Women’s League will have their annual convention in Nadi during the Easter weekend.
